We started breeding Huacaya alpacas in 2016. We first discovered alpacas whilst out on a sunny Sunday afternoon drive in the countryside.
We spotted several alpacas in a field and stopped to take a closer look, the animals being inquisitive things, came up the gate to greet us. At about that moment the owners came over and invited us into the field to meet them, within minutes we were surrounded by alpacas, what a surprise! these gentle, friendly animals were. We knew at that moment our hearts had been captured, and from that moment on, we were hooked.
Over the following 3 years, we investigated alpacas looking at the business opportunities as well as the care and wellbeing of the animals and what was required to become alpaca breeders.
Lots of research and a husbandry course later, we bought a quality herd of alpacas.
We researched a number of breeders within our area, and we now have a herd that has alpacas from 5 different breeding stocks. We had an expert breeder help us select these quality animals. We started with a herd of 12 adult females for breeding. From those 12, we now have a top quality herd, some of which are available for sale.
Although we bought our herd in 2016 they didn’t arrive on our farm until 2018, and within a week, to our delight, we had 2 cria born.
During the period of 2016 – 2018 we were converting our land into paddocks, having a house and office built, also we used this time to seed our paddocks with a quality grass forage in preparation for the animals arrival.
We are fortunate to live in a pretty village in Dorset, and enjoy every single day caring for these wonderful animals.
